Erica. It has been an exceptionally long time since I have done a proper Sketchbooked Illustration, I have been busy with Masters Work and Teaching Full time at RIT. Since I started this blog as a means of maintaining my sanity by drawing my friends and loved ones, I figured I might as well do a few once again, regardless of how busy I may be. Since Erica and I have been playing draw something a lot lately, and since she made a birthday request for me to illustrate her, here goes…

Hopefully she will like this… I believe I have been staring too long at this one and I also feel a little bit rusty with my wacom tablet…

Redesigning Vignelli Project: Hamlyn Side Table Design. The goal of this project was to be inspired by a design the the Vignelli Center’s Archive, and follow up with a design of your own. Using the Vignelli Reclining Chair Designed for the Hamlyn Center, I created an accompanying side table.

The purpose of my design is to fall in line with principles set by Vignelli as well as principles of Universal design as defined in the same era (circa 1998). The main features of my design are that of a curved table top that allows for easy scooping of items such as a remote control, pills, or a bowl, underside table grip, lightweight structure and wheels for easy movement and placement. I also chose to have the same table top attachment and form factor for the table legs as the Vignelli handkerchief chair.

The last two photos show some re-envisioned models side by side with my table, made by Jason Liu and Randall Yarborough.

Fun fact: The the location of the indentation point in the table was created using golden mean proportions.

Just put up my new portfolio site, where you can see a sampling of my work. I organized it out into three sections, New Media, Industrial Design, and Illustrative Design. I still have some more work to post there, but it’s a start. I will hopefully be applying to some internships for the summer to get some more Graduate Credits, as I race to get my degree in time to be able to apply for a tenure track position at RIT next year. (fingers crossed)

I’m making an abacus based off of iPhone proportions. I may even add a case on the back. Here is my progress so far… The body is vacuum formed out of Polystyrene.

The concept is a commentary on old vs. modern computing and the role of human factors in the use of that technology.

Having a gallery show soon, will be displaying 12 remixed Sketchbooked pieces printed on canvas and stretched on wood frames. Here is some of the process, pre-stretch, the darkened, mirrored edges go around the frame. The above piece is 2x3 feet.

Gallery Show opening will be March 2nd at Pistachio Press (http://www.pistachiopress.com/ ) in Rochester, NY. It is part of the First Friday Gallery Walk showcase.
